When I come to the point of our lesson where I want to know, did my students actually learn what I hoped they did? Here's one way I find out. FlipGrid's missions statement is "to empower educators as they help learners of all ages define their voices, share their voices, and respect the diverse voices of others." In this FlipGrid video, I learn just how impactful owning your learning experience can be.
How does FlipGrid help with the evaluation process? The answer might surprise you, pretty easily! The educator is able to create a group, establish the learning objective through creating a topic, then shares that topic with the learners. Learners respond to the objective and provided information to communicate their ideas or work to not only the teacher, but other learners if the teacher allows.
As soon as I began teaching remotely, I began searching for ways to demonstrate skills, techniques, and learning objectives without them in front of me. I wanted to engage them with the kind of feedback they could provide if we were face to face. FlipGrid made that happen. Something very interesting happened as well. Students were able to give each other feedback in a professional fashion. They were not only completing the evaluation for themselves, they wanted to see and help others with their evaluations. They synthesized their own evaluations and were able to go back and see how they could improve from the first video. Mastery may not have taken place initially, but students could see their own progression.
While I am grateful for what FlipGrid has already accomplished, I am excited to see what they have in store for us. They continue to add new features that make it easier for us to communicate in a global educational community. Personally, I used FlipGrid to communicate with my college mentor with cancer months before his passing. He was living in the Philippines where texting and phone conversations were not an option. His hospital had wifi and I figured out FlipGrid would be the most effective way to communicate with him. I am grateful for the videos and communication I was able to share with him. While I will miss him deeply, I have our videos to remind me of our journey.
