As educators, we usually spend a copious amount of time staying up to date with the newest educational trends and professional development to help our learners. Imagine my surprise when I have taken everything from Kagan to AVID and never heard of UDL.
While these professional development tools are great tools, they pale in comparison to Universal Design for Learning tools. UDL tools are the umbrella that protects and includes everyone. According to CAST (Center for Applied Special Technology), "the UDL framework guides the design of instructional goals, assessments, methods, and materials that can be customized and adjusted to meet individual needs."
In this video, CAST explains how UDL works.
In my next two blog posts, we will dive into the learning community that is twitter's #UDLChat.
